Below The Ground

“Wolves On The Mend” by Steep Leans

This week I have chosen “Wolves on the Mend” by Steep Leans. The Philadephia grunge rock band released this tune in September 2015 with Ghost Ramp Records.

Ghost Ramp records is an LA based record label. Some bands signed with them include Wavves, Cloud Nothings, Courtney Love, and more.

I tried to dig deeper to find out information about the band, but it was extremely limited – I guess this is some pretty underground stuff.

I discovered this song when I first saw the band when they opened for Wavves at The Opera House, this past September. I remember specifically loving this song, but it honestly took me months to find because I couldn’t remember who opened for them, and I had a hard time finding that out online.

I enjoy the fact that this song has no true introduction, it just kind of gets right into it. I find with some songs that certain artists almost try too hard to add in introductions and it ends up sounding awkward, so I like the fact that this song isn’t like that. Instrumentally there isn’t anything too crazy going on in this song and I would say that its pretty repetitive; but that’s okay – it totally works in this song. His voice is pretty generic, nothing too special but in all honesty, this is perfect for the grunge rock sound they’re going for. This is exactly the kind of voice that is perfect for this type of track, and that’s why it works. I like the soft guitar in the background, it really adds a nice touch to the sound.
