To celebrate the upcoming release of their new album Everything Feels Better Now, From Indian Lakes took the stage at Adelaide Hall on Monday night. Prior to their set, three bands warmed up the crowd with an eclectic mix of sound. Toronto based band St. Andrews who was added to the concert date late last week were the first band to hit the stage. This Indie Rock band led by lead vocalist Logan Trearty sang songs from their debut EP Wolf, as well as a new song entitled “Heart Attack”. The band teased new music that was coming soon, and thanked everyone for coming out this Thanksgiving
The second act of the night (and one of my new favourite bands) was UKAE, who brought the tempo of the night up with their indie meets folk-pop sound. The chemistry between co-lead singers Taylor Whittaker and Nickie Minshall was infectious and their harmonies captivated the audience. Whittaker’s raspy rock vocals never once felt like it overshadowed Minshall’s sweet sweet sound. During every song you felt the need to get on the stage and dance with Nickie, as she moved all around the stage. What impressed me the most were the diverse musical instrument choices, from a ukulele to a harmonic; UKAE were not messing around. They are definitely a band I hope to hear more from in the future.
As we continue on the thread of “bands I hope to hear more from” Wild Wild Horses were the next band to take the stage before From Indian Lakes’ takeover. This Indie-Alternative band hailing from London, U.K. really wanted to feel the love from the crowd when lead singer Jack Edwards asked everyone to get closer to the stage. I discovered this band a few months ago on Twitter when Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon a Time, House) tweeted about a “short film” she directed. The short film turned out to be a four-part music video for Wild Wild Horses debut EP – Ordinary Life. After singing Demon Days (Do It All Again), the band slowed it down teasing that a “Toronto” artist sang the next song. When the first beat dropped and “Earned It” by the Weeknd began the audience smiled at a familiar sound. Edwards’s vocals really carried throughout the entire show, but his high notes during Earned It definitely left chills down our spines. The band wrapped up their set with Strange Future (new song), Ordinary Life and Youth. Those who were moved by the band were very excited to approach the stage and talk to the band, as they packed up their equipment.
It was now time for the band of the evening to make their way on stage, as the crowd huddled together in front of the stage; the anticipation had built for too long. From Indian Lakes has such a unique sound that layered acoustics, while giving you that electronic sound. Lead singer Joey Vannucchi addressed the crowd saying that he was worried nobody would come to see them on Canadian Thanksgiving, but he was so happy that we made it. Vannucchi teased the band’s upcoming studio album “Everything Feels Better Now” (releases October 14) prior to singing The Monster and Blank Tapes. As the late night set continued the crowd never missed a beat singing along to every single song. After the main setlist ended Vannucchi returned to the stage without his bandmates and asked the crowd what song they wanted to hear for the encore. One fan wanted to hear Your Son from their second studio album Able Bodies, and was graciously rewarded. Monday was definitely a night to be thankful for these for bands and their music.
