“I do this because I love it,” says Slim Sly Slender, the visual artist turned musician. “Music is unlike visual art because when a person buys a painting, they put it on a wall, and only they and their friends can enjoy the piece of art. Music is for everybody. I love sharing it, and I’m excited to get this album out there in front of more people.”
The Maryland-based artist is a powerful creative mind who has been creating art for as long as he can remember. His musical style and sound is largely influenced by The Beatles with an unmistakable contemporary 60’s pop rock vibe.
He just released his 6th album, Pay to Play. The 10 song album is full of frisky and vibrant songs that exude a sense of playfulness you won’t hear in other music in the market. Slim Sly Slender isn’t afraid to blend the lines of influence and genre to create music that moves him.
You get a sense of The Beatles in every song, but especially so in songs like “Housefull,” “The House on Purselane Street” and “The One That Didn’t Walk Away.” He even includes some hip hop influence in other songs like “On and On,” “Cockhound,” “Black Charger,” and “Tess.” Pay to Play is rounded out by softer songs like the ballad “Can It Be Different” and the dreamy “Sleeping Through Childhood.”
Slim Sly Slender’s songwriting is inspired by poets and literature, therefore, concepts and words come before music. From there, he etches out a soundtrack to his lyrics. As a capable multi-instrumentalist, Slim demos up the songs and then collaborates with his community of musicians, working together with them until the songs feel finished.
From The Artist : “For me, this album is about obsession and joy. I think many songwriters can identify with the way a new song idea can dominate your consciousness to where it seems to be running in the background at all times. This obsession seems to last until I make a demo that I am satisfied with. The joy comes when I get in the studio with the wonderful musicians that I am fortunate to work with and hear the song develop into the version I want to share.”
