On Sunday Oct 12th, Centre in the Square in Kitchener was the host for legend B.B. King! People were expecting to see one of history’s biggest legends in the Blues circuit. What they didn’t expect was to see another amazing guitarist who has wowed the Hamilton scene for years.
After Steve Strongman had completed people walked by, saying, ‘Who was that guy? He is incredible!’… “That Steve Strongman plays with heart” …. “I didn’t know he was here, he wasn’t in the program! I will have to check him out; he is great!”
I thought,”Of course he is”!
I grew up in Hamilton and we have had the privilege of seeing Steve perform way back in the days of Hess Village music scene. Steve Strongman has worked hard, played hard and is one of the nicest guys you will meet. Dressed to kill and plays with all the feeling you could ask for. But not only does Steve Strongman have all these talents wrapped up into one person he also a gifted song writer!
Early this year this Maple Blues winner took home Guitar Player of the Year, SOCAN Songwriter of the Year and Recording/Producer of the Year. And if that wasn’t enough, he also took home a 2013 Juno for Album of the Year for his release “A Natural Fact”.
Strongman started to woo the crowd at exactly 8pm with bassist, Mark McIntyre and drummer Dave King. Dave King solid drumming and laying Mark McIntyre’s grooves created a perfect foundation for Strongman’s sweet voice and even sweeter guitar playing. However, after seeing Steve play a number of times, the sound was very polite.
It was funny hearing him tell the story of his youth. He said he was going to the library, when in reality, he was practicing. Not thinking through that his mother was the librarian.
Steve closed out the show by traveling into the audience. He moved so fast the spot light couldn’t find him till he stood still!
If you like Blues, you should put Steve Strongman on your must see list.
