Mimicking Birds at Echo Beach

Photographs by Sean Chin.

Mimicking Birds are a very pleasant band; one fitting for filling the opening slot for both Modest Mouse and Kevin Drew. Their set encompassed percussive flourishes and gliding guitars which worked well with the grey clouds passing overhead.  With a clear influence of Modest Mouse and even Sigur Ros within their music, their set was peaceful and cold. Their presence was a bit lacking, however, and while it matched their music fairly well, they can easily do a bit more to engage the crowd. They played their instruments with emotion but stood stiffly in place. They still have time to grow and clearly have the wonders of Kevin Drew and Modest Mouse to learn first hand from. Nonetheless, a safe performance is better than a bad performance, and in due time Mimicking Birds, if they mimic their idols a bit more, will feel more comfortable on stage.
