Echosmith, The Colourist at The Mod Club

This week, Echosmith showed Toronto just how cool they really are. The Sierota siblings (Sydney, Jaime, Noah, and Graham) brought their starry-eyed anthems to Mod Club Theatre on Thursday evening for their first headlining tour.  With the success of their single “Cool Kids” and the release of their debut, Talking Dreams, this quartet are showing no signs of slowing down.

Opening for Echosmith was indie pop band, The Colourist. The band charmed us with a couple of tracks from their self-titled debut (“Yes Yes”, “Tonight”, and “Stray Away”). Their summery hooks were enough to chase those winter blues away. Also they delight our ears with a brand new single, “When I’m Away” from their upcoming EP.  At times, their nervousness got the best of them; but the Colourist’s live performance of engaging songs (laced with irresistible hooks) makes up for it.

It was time for Echosmith to hit the stage. Things got off to a solid start with “Run Off in the Night” and “Let’s Love” which featured how musically gifted the Sierota siblings are. Playing songs from Talking Dreams, the four piece band brought youthful energy with professional showmanship which you wouldn’t expect from a new band that’s made up of kids barely out of high school. Echosmith also paid homage to the Talking Heads by covering “This Must Be the Place” which was done brilliantly.

Although Sydney is the star of the group, she makes it known this is a family affair.  The interaction between her and her brothers shows how close they are. And you could tell they love being on stage together, surrounded by people who love and get their music.

Before performing their smash-hit single, “Cool Kids”, Sydney took a minute to remind the audience what this song is all about.  ‘You are not alone in feeling that way.  Be okay with who you are’.  If Echosmith goal was to reach music lovers of all ages and personalities, I think they did what they’ve set out to do. Their sold out show was packed with people of all race, age, and creed.

Despite their ability to headline a live show, Echosmith is still a young band finding its way.  But the future looks bright for the Sierota siblings; I’m interested to see what they do next.
