It was abundantly clear, upon arriving at the Air Canada Centre, that cell phones were absolutely prohibited. The security guard barked the same message to everyone shuffling into the venue, “do you have a cell phone? Put it away.” We got the message (not the text message) loud and clear. If you dared to text, tweet, take a photo, or anything of the sort, you would be ejected from the venue by security with no refund. Sadly, the countless signs and warnings did not stop some.
The Plastic Cup Boyz, Joey Wells, Na’im Lynn, and Will Horton, warmed up the crowd and set the tone for an evening of comedy. I found all three men very funny, Joey Wells appealing to my humour the most. While some of their jokes were distasteful, in my opinion, they got good laughs from the crowd.
Kevin Hart obviously stole the show with his What Now material. His stories were relatable and hilarious because he had us all thinking about ourselves being in similar situations. He told a story about a troublesome raccoon, being scared to death when you hear a noise at night, sex toys, and ordering a drink at Starbucks. The Starbucks shtick has been done before, so the material wasn’t exactly ground breaking, but Hart’s delivery was on point, nonetheless.
From his facial expressions to vocal influxes, Hart had me laughing a lot. There were some points where I had to consciously try not to laugh because my cheeks were aching so much.
The show flowed well and there was never a dull moment. I really enjoyed how Hart transitioned from one joke to the next, while still bringing it back to material discussed earlier in the evening. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Hart performed three times for Toronto in one weekend; the guy knows what he is doing!
