Jeremy Underground at Luanda House

Jeremy Underground has spent the past number of years touring his popular ‘My Love Is Underground’ series worldwide. Toronto finally got it’s chance to party with the Parisian DJ last Friday when he took over Luanda House, supported by the local DJ duo Members Only.

Members Only are no strangers to putting on awesome shows in Toronto. As curators of the ‘Evening Standard’ event series they have hosted some of dance music’s finest including Todd Terje, Hunee and Horse Meat Disco. Their ability to book fresh talent is matched by their skill as selectors, evident on Friday as they built an easy, smooth groove which compelled the audience to dance.

Luanda House, an intimate, dark, basement on Bloor West was an apt location for the show. Often used as a dance studio, the space is adorned with a wall of mirrors facing the DJ booth, and has a minimal, stripped back feel. The wooden floor was put to good use by the enthusiastic audience, which grew as Members Only played us closer to midnight.

Jeremy Underground’s passion for the golden era of New York and New Jersey house is obvious. His vinylonly ‘My Love is Underground’ imprint has been unearthing and rereleasing tracks which epitomise the authentic 90’s house grove since 2010. In that time he has also made a name for himself behind the turntables, rocking dance floors worldwide with thoughtful, complex house sets.

The genius of Jeremy Underground’s performance stems from the unpredictability of his track selection. Deep underground and unreleased songs speckle his performances, mixed with the odd crowd favorite and more than a few curve balls. Soul and disco tracks were mixed effortlessly with house classics, keeping the audience moving into the early hours. The elation of the crowd as he dropped the Sydney Youngblood classic ‘If I Only Could’ was a highlight, as was the surprise we felt upon hearing the instrumental track from New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ in the mix. More than a few damp foreheads adorned the crowd as the night wore on, testiment to the skilled DJ’s ability to drive his audience.
