In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of their 1994 debut album, Burn My Eyes, Machine Head treated Toronto to an evening showcasing their discography over an intimate 3hrs together.
It was a very special evening for fans as the first set Machine Head played featured the current line up with Decapitated’s Wacław Kiełtyka on guitar and Devilment’s Matt Alston on drums. The second set featured Logan Mader on guitar and Chris Kontos on drums, both of who appeared on Burn My Eyes.
The first half of the night, songs such as ‘Take My Scars’, ‘Locust’, ‘Aesthetics of Hate’, and ‘Catharsis’ were played, making the setlist very dynamic as it kept everyone at the Danforth moving as they jumped between new and old songs. At one point, vocalist, Robb Flynn, asked if it was anyone’s first time seeing Machine Head, and quite a bit of people raised their hands. I found this to be really telling about how much Machine Head is still influencing the metal community. Not only have they managed stay in the game over the years but they are still continuing to draw in new fans. He even pointed out one fan that he saw in the crowd and told the story of how the fan sang on stage with Machine Head back in 2005 while Flynn wasn’t feeling great and mentioned how impressed both him and the band were of the fan’s skills.
Following the first set of the night was a 10 minute break before the band reemerged on stage with Mader on guitar, and Kontos on drums to perform Burn My Eyes in it’s entirety. The crowd absolutely lost it during the set, and I found it to be the perfect way to end off the night after celebrating 25 years of Machine Head.
