George Collins has always had multiple interests. His love for exploration and discovery has led him to and from music. He was turned on to music by his older siblings and cousins at a young age and started learning the guitar in elementary school and through middle school. As an avid reader and a passionate musician, he has strived to be as good a songwriter as Paul McCartney, as good a guitarist as Eric Clapton, and as good a philosopher as Plato.
In college, he played music to pay for his tuition, but he ended up making quite a name for himself in Charlottesville. He even played in an eleven-piece funk band called Common Knowledge which included Carter Beauford and the late LeRoi Moore, two of the founding members of The Dave Matthews Band. Now, after 25 years in the finance world, he is finally ready to take his music to the next step. “I don’t want to go to my grave with my stories and songs still inside me,” he says. “I can always make more money, but I can never make more time.”
He released his new single, “Toward the Light,” from his upcoming debut EP, It’s Been a Long Time. It’s unlike any of his other songs, but it’s the most personal song he’s ever released. It has his signature pop-rock stylings, but has more of a jazz and dream-like quality than his other songs. It’s slower, yet still packs a punch. Lyrically, he sings about time, age, and the changes that come with both.
Since writing this song in his early twenties, the song’s meaning has changed and evolved with time. The chorus goes “Changes upon changes, will the world forever spin?/Don’t know where I’m going, and I’m not sure where I’ve been/But it’s all right/As long as I keep moving toward the light,” may have meant one thing in his youth, but resonated differently in his middle age. “I have always felt this inner compass and believed that, no matter what happened, if I followed my heart, my soul, my instincts, and stayed true to myself, I knew it would all end up well.” George really makes the best out of living his life to the fullest and it’s clear through “Toward the Light” that he doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon.
From The Artist : “This is a deeply personal song, and my favorite of all the tunes I have written.”
