Hailing from County Dublin, Ireland, and now living in Greystones, County Wicklow, for the last twenty years with his family, Garrett Anthony Rice intends to make a significant impact on the global music scene in 2025.
EQUINOX is the first double album (18 songs) to be released by a debut solo artist as their second record in musical history, so the task of writing and completing this record was pretty daunting and enormous.
Today we’re excited to be teaming up with Garret to exclusively premiere “Try To Make It Right (Our Endgame),” the latest single from his forthcoming double album. The track unfolds like a conversation that has already passed the point of repair, although the title implies that a solution might be possible, the song itself rejects this notion, choosing instead to explore the uncomfortable area where negotiations begin to falter.
The song starts off in an open, expansive sound space that has always been one of Rice’s signature characteristics. It is lonely in its reverberations, but without being overly dramatic about it, more like the gradual dissolution of late Britpop music rather than any form of self-examination. The song leaves enough room for this separation before it starts to change.
The melody becomes more focused, sharp, and somewhat harsh, indicating that the subtext has at last emerged into the open. This is a quick burst of energy, but an important one. Rice does not maintain it. Rather, the music backs away from it, going back to the state it was before, now different, and with the peace no longer so reliable. This dynamic process shapes the song.
By the final passage, the tension has accumulated rather than been resolved. The song ends on a high note that makes it seem like it should come to an end, but it doesn’t quite get there, keeping the listener hanging. “Try To Make It Right (Our Endgame)” is particularly compelling for listeners familiar with the legacy of songwriters who realize that sometimes not saying something speaks volumes more than saying something.
