BEHIND THE SONG: “Three Missed Calls” By Kerrington Gillespie

Canadian country artist Kerrington Gillespie has released her new single “Three Missed Calls”, on all streaming platforms.Today we’re excited to be teaming up with her to give our readers an exclusive behind the scenes look at the track.

The song was initially featured on two of Spotify’s editorial playlists – “North Country” and “New Music Friday Canada” – before Kerrington graced the cover of “Fresh Finds Canada”, accentuating the positive response to the single.

Written by the artist, Tavish Crowe (Carly Rae Jepsen, Sacha) and producer Jared Manierka (Fionn, Emily Rowed), “Three Missed Calls” is a glossy pop-leaning country tune that mirrors the influences of Sabrina Carpenter and Megan Moroney and radiates relatability and quirkiness in examining the emotions that emerge when the person you’ve moved on from starts calling again.

BEHIND THE SONG: “THREE MISSED CALLS” BY KERRINGTON GILLESPIE

Hey, it’s Kerrington Gillespie! I’m a pop-country artist from Vancouver Island and I’m excited to tell you all about my newest single, “Three Missed Calls”!

The Inspiration

The idea for this song came from a conversation I had with some friends. Two of them were going through the same thing and, I mean… we had a whole night of talking about it. We definitely gave it way more attention than it deserved, but it made me realize just how universal it is.

Certain people just have a way of pulling you right back in, even when you know better and even when you thought enough time had passed. You finally get over someone, move on with your life, and get to a place where you’re genuinely happy again. Then somehow right when you’ve reached that point, they decide to reach out. How do they always know?!

So, I wanted to write about that frustrating cycle in an honest way. Sometimes moving on isn’t a straight line, and this song captures that moment when the past unexpectedly shows up again.

The Creation

This was such a fun song to write. My co-writer Jared Manierka and I started it on the first day and immediately felt like we were onto something. The next day we came back with fresh ears and decided to bring in another writer, Tavish Crowe, who’s an incredible guitarist. We switched up a few things and gave the song a whole new energy that really brought it to life.

Sonically, I was really inspired by Sabrina Carpenter. I wanted the track to feel super pop-forward while still keeping some country influences throughout. From the beginning, my goal was to make something fun out of a situation that really isn’t fun at all. I love songs that can take a tough moment and make it feel a little lighter. When you’re going through something, sometimes you want a song that gets it but can also make you smile. That was definitely the goal with this one.

The Audience

I always try to write songs that aren’t just about me. A lot of my ideas come from things I’ve experienced, but also from watching what my friends go through. I’m definitely not trying to expose anybody’s secrets, but I do love taking bits and pieces of stories and finding a way to tell them through music.

This song is for anyone who’s ever thought they were finally over someone and then maybe it’s a random Snapchat, or they message or call out of nowhere.. Whatever it is, it always seems to happen at the worst possible time. It’s annoying, confusing, and honestly kind of ridiculous when you think about it.

I hope for anyone going through it, when they hear this song, they can see a little bit of their own story in it and have a little fun.
