November was the month of all the big arena shows, but December is the month of amazing club shows. From small and up and coming acts to artists doing residency’s like Alexisonfire to doing their annual Danforth showcase. If you are saving up for Christmas and can’t check out these shows make sure you go all out for New Year’s! Along with the show I preview at the bottom there are shows from Wintersleep, calt., The Sadies and more! Merry Christmas, happy holidays and have a safe New Year, I’ll see you in January!
Basic White @ Sneaky Dee’s
December 2nd, 2017
$8.00-$10.00 | 19 +
Part of the reason for this monthly tip sheet is to highlight some lesser known acts, and it has been a while since I’ve highlighted someone who isn’t all over Pitchfork yet. Basic White is a terrific hard rocking band from London, Ontario and are slowly making a name for themselves. Catch them tearing up Sneaky Dee’s when you can say later you were a fan from the start.
A. Savage @ Garrison
December 5th, 2017
$13.50 | 19 +
The Parquet Courts frontman released an excellent solo record this year that went pretty much under the radar, his band also put out a concept album with Italian composer Daniela Luppi that didn’t get enough praise either but who cares when you make music as great as Andrew Savage does. You won’t see him in such an intimate venue anymore so take this opportunity to let it all out at The Garrison.
Angel Olsen @ The Phoenix
December 6th, 2017
$29.50 | 19 +
One of the most pre-eminent hard folk rockers, released a beautiful B-sides album called Phases recently and her cast off work is still better than almost everyone else. She can sing delicate ballads and shred on reverb soaked rockers all while making you shedding a few tears.
iHeartRadio Jingle Ball @ ACC
December 9th, 2017
$96.60-$199.50 | All Ages
The annual bash featuring the biggest names in radio music returns with very special performances by Fifth Harmony, Kelly Clarkson, Post Malone, Cardi B, Jessie Reyez and more! There are going to be so many stars you won’t want to miss this. Check out this preview for more info!
Alvvays @ The Mod Club
December 12-15th, 2017
$22.50 | 19 +
Not one or two shows, or even three or four, Alvvays is playing a staggering FIVE (!!!!!) shows at The Mod Club to celebrate the release of September’s Antisocialites. Molly Rankin and crew kept adding shows because they kept selling out and sure enough if you don’t already have tickets good luck on getting in. They probably could have sold out Danforth for five shows too. Alvvays is really that big of a deal in Toronto.
The Districts @ Velvet Underground
December 12th, 2017
$16.50 | 19 +
I first caught The Districts opening for White Denim a few years back, and they blew me away from the first song and I became an immediate fan. Their latest album Popular Manipulations is their best work yet, an album that might very well top my personal list for albums of the year. They put on a fun and intense show that will be one for the year’s highlights.
Daniel Ceasar @ The Danforth Music Hall
December 16-20th, 2017
$22.00-$28.00 | All Ages
Not to be outdone by Alvvays, Daniel Caesar is actually doing five shows at Danforth Music Hall himself. After being the buzziest thing in RnB since the rise of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, Toronto’s own Caesar finally released his full length debut record, Freudian, this summer to massive critical acclaim. He was also just rewarded with TWO Grammy Nominations for Best RnB Performance (for “Get You”) and Best RnB Album. The world is his.
Hey Rosetta! @ The Phoenix
December 17-19th, 2017
$39.50-$49.50 | All Ages
Hey Rosetta! is also getting in on the multiple shows, although these will be a bit more somber as the Newfoundland band is calling it quits. After four albums and a bunch of EP’s the band made an indelible mark on the Canadian indie scene, even if they never fully became household names. While a reunion isn’t totally out of the cards they won’t be gracing us anytime soon.
Jim Cuddy @ Horseshoe Tavern
December 17th, 2017
$49.50 | 19 +
The legendary front man for Blue Rodeo is putting out a new solo record in the spring so he is giving a special show at the very intimate (for him especially) Horseshoe Tavern, a venue that once was a launching pad for his group in the 80’s. Sure he will be playing Massey Hall in the new year, but where else can you be so close to an icon? Oh good luck getting in, as it is already more than sold out.
Dwayne Gretzky @ Enercare Centre
December 31st, 2017
$75.00-$250.00 | 19 +
The cover band to end all cover bands has been all over the place this year from playing at the Grey Cup to throwing a special celebration for the dearly departed Tom Petty, they are having a giant Infinity Ball at the Enercare Centre located at the CNE grounds for you to ring in the New Year. It’s going to be an absolute blast and if you don’t have plans yet, get your tickets to toast to the hardest working band that doesn’t write their own tunes!
