Dave Tate, acclaimed singer/songwriter from Zion National Park in Utah, utilizes everything in his musical arsenal to create the best alternative rock sound there is. His pure, angelic vocals with dynamic acoustic guitar and poetic imagery present a unique combination of strength and intimacy that permeates through the speakers. A multi-instrumentalist, Tate records and produces his albums at his own studio in Zion Canyon. Tate’s music is inspired by an avid love for the natural world and he can often be found exploring the vast horizons of the American West.
Dave Tate just released his newest album, The Adventure. It’s a 10 song album all about the uncertainty in life. He dives into the dark and light within himself. It’s about trust, faith, and finding your own strength to overcome anything. “The Adventure is a mix of new songs and songs I have been traveling with for a long time, and now they are coming out into the sun.,” says Dave. “The adventure I have been on is one of getting to know and trust myself and experiencing a deeper sense of belonging here in this world. That is what I hope to inspire with this album.”
The Adventure leans more into the alternative rock and adult contemporary genres, a place where Dave hasn’t gone before. Each song tackles the same general theme of uncertainty in life, but a few songs stand out among the rest, the first being “Undone.” This song sounds a little like the Beatles meets Dave Matthews musically and his voice is very much on the Jeff Buckley side of the spectrum. This song is about the change in oneself and how that can be difficult. He sings “Something inside’s come undone to make room for a new life.” We all change from within to become more evolved and mature. This song truly captures that essence.
“Close the Distance” is another song that’s about the inner journey, but this time it’s more about relationships. This alternative rock song tackles the ideas of healing, that over time, the space that grows between a couple needs to be mended in order to move forward. He sings “Close the distance grown between us, heal the heart that once was broken,” and “say the words left unspoken.” We all know that relationships are messy, but we never really get the true and honest version that Dave is sharing. He wants it to get messy and hard because that’s what produces the best results.
“I Look Inside” is a song that sticks out because it’s a vulnerable telling of what our deepest desires are. He questions whether or not what he’s doing in this moment is what he really wants, and if it will ever meet his expectations. He sings, arguably, his most poetic lyrics on the album in this song, singing “So damn tired of trying to reach for that star. I look inside and yearn, lost in the way that I thought it would burn,” and later sings “will it ever be that good again?” His openness to express the feelings of doubt and not really getting what you thought you would is fantastic. We all know that feeling, of the excitement for one thing only to find out we had a false perception and deceiving ourselves.
The Adventure is an album that needs to be heard. It tackles so many themes, but the biggest being the journey of self trust and strength; it’s about the inner and outer journey and the bold and unknown parts of life. Tate regularly performs 150+ shows per year and is currently performing in residency at Under Canvas Zion and The Cliffrose Lodge, Hilton Curio Hotel in Zion Canyon. Be sure to check him out and listen to The Adventure. It’s not one you want to sleep on.
From The Artist : “The Adventure’ dives headfirst into the uncertainty of life, the dark and the light, the heavy and the easy, and the balance of walking between them. The Adventure represents a journey of learning to trust in one’s own strength in the face of circumstance. The album is a mix of new songs and songs I have been traveling with for a long time, and now they are coming out into the sun. The adventure I have been on is one of getting to know and trust myself and experiencing a deeper sense of belonging here in this world. That is what I hope to inspire with this album.”
