Multi prime time Emmy-award winning show, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, brings its unstoppable tour to Toronto at the Sony Centre this Friday, January 22nd. It’ll feature the next generation of America’s most eclectic and innovative dancers trained by the industry’s top choreographers. As a mixed programme it’ll not only feature a repertoire of favourite routines, but original routines choreographed for the tour.
This tour compared to previous SYTYCD tours, will be especially unique in that Season 12 changed its formatting to create “Team Street’ made up of street dancers and “Team Stage,” made up of classically trained dancers compete against each other, choosing in its final episodes, the top contenders from both teams for the tour.
Whether you’re dance veteran or introducing yourself to the world of dance for the first time, SYTYCD is an event not to be missed as it’s undeniably a front-runner in the resurgence of mainstream culture’s interest in dance around the world. As a spectacle of high concept and intricate choreography it celebrates all genres of dance, from tap to hip-hop and will feature some of the best ensemble and solo choreography in the US right now. It’s a rare chance to see the some of the first professional debuts of dancers soon-to-be in high demand. Previous SYTYCD winners and final contestants have gone on to incredibly successful careers touring with the likes of Janet Jackson and Madonna. This year ‘Team Stage” winner Gabby Diaz won the chance to dance with celebrated icon Jennifer Lopez when she begins her residency in Las Vegas at Planet Hollywood this month.
With 70 dates, this marks SYTYCD’s most extensive tour yet and opened with rave reviews for its first show in Grand Prairie Texas in October last year. Top 10 finalists showcased will be: Team Stage’s Gaby Diaz, Edson Juarez, Jim Nowakowski, Hailee Payne and Derek Piquette; and Team Street’s Megan “Megz” Alfonso, Eddie “Neptune” Eskridge, Virgil Gadson, Jessica “JJ” Rabone and Jana “Jaja” Vankova. Nigel Lythgoe, judge, executive producer and co-creator of the hit FOX series expressed “I am thrilled with this season’s new Stage vs. Street format and the brilliant, fresh talent we have discovered. These dancers have inspired the choreographers to create remarkable dance numbers…..I am excited for your favorite dancers to bring their inspiration and routines to even more cities on this year’s nationwide tour.”
