Wet Leg with Mary In The Junkyard at History

Wet Leg’s Toronto stop at History proved just how quickly a band can go from cult favourite to full-blown phenomenon. The Isle of Wight rockers brought their sharp humour, fuzzed-out riffs, and unshakable hooks to a sold-out room that was ready for a great time.

From the moment they walked on stage, the crowd’s energy was electric. As the fog from the smoke machines rolled across the stage in large plumes, the band kicked things off with the latest single, Catch These Fists. The show was a visual overload of pulsating, blinding strobes, thick smoke and high octane rock’n’roll. Teasdale, with her sly grins and wry delivery, had fans hanging on every line, while Chambers stood cool and steady, her guitar tone permeating throughout the room.

It was an enthusiastic crowd and they ate up the performance, belting out lyrics to their favourite songs. At times, doing a call and response with lead vocalist Rhian Teasdale. What stood out most was Wet Leg’s knack for making a big room feel intimate, as if they were still playing in some cramped pub back home.

The setlist was basically a run through of both of their albums. Only a handful of songs were not performed. Of course, the biggest reaction of the night was when Chaise Longue was played near the end of the set. It’s the song that launched them into the stratosphere. The crowd erupted, singing and dancing wildly to this energetic anthem.

After seeing them live, I can a test that they are more than hype, they are an explosive and exciting live band. It was a very impressive and powerful performance for a band that is still up and coming. Hopefully they continue on the trajectory they are travelling into the sonic universe.
