Suicide Squad is one of the most anticipated movies of 2016 and it’s finally hitting theatres today. As a Virgin Mobile member, we were given the opportunity to check out the movie at an advance screening on Wednesday night. It was so cool to be a part of such an exclusive event for this Summer’s hottest blockbuster. A lot of the attendees were dressed up as their favourite characters from the movie, which really upped the atmosphere. As we checked in at the theatre, we were also given some pretty cool freebees, such as a Twenty One Pilots t-shirt and bracelet along with a mini Suicide Squad movie poster.
On top of being the most anticipated blockbuster of the Summer, the DC Comics film also holds a special place in Toronto’s heart as the movie was filmed in our city last summer. I remember going downtown at 1am in the middle of the week to try and catch a glimpse of the Joker’s car speeding down Young Street between Queen and College. I wasn’t the only one trying to catch a part of the action as the streets were filled with many on lookers. At the time it was a bit annoying with so many street closures and transit delays, but after seeing the movie and being able to pick out specific buildings and little landmarks from the city, it made it all worth it. Despite all of the negative reviews the movie seems to be getting from critics, I was personally impressed with it. Without giving anything away, I was surprised with the direction of the story line, as well as with how little Jared Leto was actually in the movie. Given all the hype surrounded by Leto’s role as the Joker leading up to the release, I was expecting him to play a bigger role throughout the film. Nonetheless, the movie kept me entertained and on my toes as the 2hr and 7 minutes seemed to have flown by.
Prior to the screening, Virgin also invited us to an exclusive event at the Fermenting Cellar in the Distillery District, where we were able to see some of the props from the movie as well as walk through some of the sets! It was such a unique and memorable experience to be able to see Deadshot’s jail cell and Harley’s Smash Room first hand – and be given the opportunity to also step inside it. The icing on the cake, was definitely when Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) & Will Smith (Deadshot) showed up to the event! Never in my life would I have thought I’d get the chance to be in the same room as Will Smith. It was for sure an event for the books.
Big thanks again to Virgin for such a memorable and unique experience. It’s crazy to think that these events are only a small portion of the awesome every day perks exclusively offered to their members!
