World Premiere

Song Premiere : “31” by Mike Edel

From The Artist : ’31 is an ‘I Won’t Back Down,’ thirties is the new twenties inspired anthem. It’s about your friends getting real jobs, buying houses, renovating their basements to their newly purchased homes, then renting it out and talking about real estate all the time.’

For his new record, Edel began working with producer Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) after sending demos to Walla while he was living north of the arctic circle in Norway. The duo adopted a ‘consistency is boring’ mantra with the new material.

’31’ is a glorious folk-pop meditation on growing older and not losing your sense of adventure. The song acts as a rallying point that your best days are not behind you. Filled with shimmering lead guitars, bouncing bass lines, and locked in drumming, the track is enveloped in a positive harmonic cascade of sound. ’31’ has enough sonic texture to keep your ears from wandering, as hidden layers become exposed on each successive listen. But it’s Edel’s songwriting that separates the track from being just a pleasant strummer. The chorus is filled with a reinforcing messaging, in both lyrics and melody, but there’s doubt and layers of complexity throughout the verses and bridge. ’31’ is a perfect cap to the summer; a great song for both afternoons in the shade, and memorable soundtrack for sitting outside as the temperatures fall in the evening. If ‘consistency is boring’ then we hope for Edel’s erratic nature to take over his soon to be released full length.

After 2 million cumulative streams across major platforms, being in rotation on CBC Music, AAA Radio across the United States, and on Sirius XM’s The Loft; after playing hundreds of shows including Rifflandia Festival, Vancouver Folk Festival, Regina Folk Festival, Victoria International Jazz Festival, and Upstream Music Festival; after sharing the stage with Serena Ryder, Foy Vance, Said The Whale and Josh Garrels; and after splitting his time between Seattle, WA and the mountains of British Columbia and getting married, Edel is taking his music in particular and his life in general across a threshold, through an open door, and into the unknown.

The upcoming album is a result of almost a full-year in the studio, and we’re excited to hear what’s next!
